A difficult decision; is a blog right for you?

There are many types of blogs out on the web including educational, informational, and news. Blogs pop up left and right, I am sure you even know a few friends who have them but do you really need one too?

Here are 5 reasons you may consider starting a blog:

  • Quick and Easy – Blogs are quick and easy to start and maintain, as long as you are motivated to do so.
  • Build Search Engine Optimization – This is a great way to get fresh and structured content on your website. They also offer an easy opportunity for internal linking to other articles which you may have written or even services you provide. This creates more user activity on your website resulting in more traffic.
  • Help You Reach Out – Now a days it is very easy for people to share your articles over social networking sites with just a click of a button. You can easily reach out to your prospective readers with information that will be useful to them.
  • Improve User Engagement – Blogs typically have comment systems integrated with them. This is a great way to share information and to communicate with people and their thoughts on your written work. This improves your site traffic and reputation as a good source for discussion and information.
  • Build Brand and Reputation – This is a great way to build a personal or companywide profile with your readers (customers). You will utilize your blog to build trust between you and the reader. This trust is what will keep bringing them back to you. You will also be able to prove to the audience you are an expert in your field.

On the other hand, a blog may not be applicable to you. Here are 5 reasons why:

  • A Lot of Work – Blogs need to be have fresh and current content, it’s what people crave. Are you willing to update your blog at least a few times every month?
  • Different Viewpoints/Opinions – You must realize everyone will not agree with you. Are you willing to debate professionally and accept others’ viewpoints?
  • Unoriginal Content – There are so many blogs out there, you need yours to be unique. Copying others content or rewriting your own multiple times will hurt you.
  • Personal – Blogs represent your personal voice so people may take them personally. Can you accept this?
  • Lifespan – Most blogs on the web have a short lifespan, which actually will make customers lose trust in you. Are you willing to accept this if it happens to you?

There are questions you must ask yourself before starting a blog. If you answer yes to these questions, then a blog may be for you!

  • Are you planning on working hard and updating it often?
  • Do you have a plan on driving people to your blog to read it?
  • Are you a good communicator and writer?
  • Do you enjoy reading blogs yourself?
  • Do you have information/knowledge beneficial to a group of knowledge?
  • Is this knowledge unique?
  • Are you good at sparking discussion?

Blogs are a double-edged sword; they could make or break your site. They can really help your site become more personable to the readers while improving your image at the same time as improving search engine rankings. However, they are a lot of work and can be difficult to maintain and sustain.
