Can Email Marketing Produce Sales? Can Email Marketing Produce Sales?

With many new forms of internet marketing emerging such as social media and social video, email marketing has been getting quite the bad rep as many criticize its effectiveness in this day and age. But is email marketing’s effectiveness truly dropping or are marketer’s simply enamored by the new opportunities to connect with their audience. A 2012 survey of 1,481 Americans answers this question and many others. Let’s take a look.

Taking a look at the statistics, we can see that email marketing has been cited as the overall most effective marketing method of driving sales with direct mail trailing close behind.

Email Marketing's Effect on Purchase Behavior

It’s no surprise that the general trend of effectiveness is the new technologies such as social media, text messaging and mobile apps prove more effective with the younger crowd and the traditional phone and direct mail is more effective in converting the older generation. One surprising statistic I found was that Facebook is on the verge of overtaking telephone sales. I’m also curious where radio, television and print ads are since they seem to be absent from this survey.

Here are some additional findings from this survey:

Changes in Consumer Preferred Marketing Channels
Channels for Sharring Content
Where do People Look For Deals - Marketing

The reality is that deciding how big a role email marketing plays in your overall strategy really depends on the audience you are trying to market to. No matter what demographic this is, email marketing should play some role in converting prospects into sales.
